One benefit of growing plants in pots is that you can easily move them to a sunny place when they start to become leggy in the shade, or move them to partial shade when you notice that they wilt in full sun. A young Thai gardening enthusiast has a very healthy plant growing in a pot in his Bangkok backyard. However, not all growers have been unsuccessful with the herb. Without first being acclimatised to higher temperatures, the plants soon succumb to the heat of the lowlands. The potted rosemary sold in Bangkok supermarkets are mostly grown in Phu Ruea in Loei province, Khao Kor in Phetchabun, or Inthanon or Pang Da in Chiang Mai, where the temperatures are cooler than in the capital. Again, the climate there is cooler than in Bangkok.īunched up: Above, to grow bigger and better than average bananas, give the plants a regular dose of fertiliser and cut back offshoots to a minimum. However, on a friend’s farm near the famous Taal Volcano in Tagaytay, in the province of Cavite some 55km south of Manila, rosemary is grown on plots in full sun. The herbs are placed alongside some taller plants that partially shade them from the sun. On our farm, where the climate is cooler than in Bangkok year round, we have two or three potted Rosmarinus officinalis, or rosemary plants, which have been thriving for years, although as absentee gardeners we could not give them tender loving care. However, although the Mediterranean climate is dry in the summer, the warmest months still average 20C. Rosemary is a native of the Mediterranean and feels at home in the dry, sandy soil and salt-laden atmosphere of the seashore, from which it derived its Latin name, Rosmarinus, meaning “dew of the sea”. Yet, whether placed in the shade or in the sun, the plants inevitably died. Some were advised by the seller to put the plant in the shade, others in full sun. I have received letters from frustrated growers whose potted plants died within a few weeks after purchase. Mr Corrigan is not alone in trying to grow the herb unsuccessfully. “Putting the plant outside to get some sun doesn’t seem to work either and the plant starts to show signs of sun exposure, ie going brown. “Thriving plants, in pots, bought in supermarkets and left indoors with good light and little watering seem to last only a matter of a few days before they start to wilt. Just like your weed eaters and leaf blowers, 2 strokes like this require you to have the proper mix of fuel and oil in order to ride instead of just putting in fuel like their 4 stroke brothers. I have seen early 90s models banshees still ripping up the dunes on my trips out to ride. Just like any other ATV out there, with proper care and routine maintenance, these things will last a lifetime. Just like any mechanical work on ATVs you still need to have SOME mechanical know how to get by but it is like you are performing rocket surgery when servicing and working on a banshee. Maintenance is also very easy on a banshee despite it being a 2 stroke. After riding that banshee, I almost didn’t want to get back on my Polaris 525S 4 stroke. As soon as I kick started it, I got an exhilarating feeling and my adrenaline was pumping as I zipped by everyone I knew. I can tell you from experience that the Yamaha Banshee is SOOO much fun to ride on the dune and they are like little devils between your legs. That high pitched scream can be heard as the sand flies up behind a banshee all throughout desert terrain. The fact that you can get a ton of horsepower out of this quad coupled with it’s insane power band, you fly around everywhere you go on this little beast. If you go out to any dunes in the United States where ATVs are present, bet your bottom dollar you will see a ton of these babies tearing up the sand. It is said that sand and dunes rob ATVs of horsepower but when you have a decked out banshee with all the bolt on accessories, new pistons, and ports polished running 65-70 horsepower, you can see where there are plenty of extra horses to go around. Australia continued to receive models until 2012 when the last models were produced. Production still continued for 2 more years in Canada until 2008. That is why we still see 2 stroke dirt bikes racing today. The stipulation to this is that off road vehicles that were designed for closed course tracks can still be developed. 2 stroke engines produce combustion more often than 4 strokes which causes more carbon exhaust and producing more pollution. The EPA put new regulations into place that affected off road vehicles by limiting the amount of hydrocarbons that can be emitted. In 2006 Yamaha rolled the last banshee off the production line for North America. This 2 stroke, 2 cylinder 350cc ATV is a cult classic in the sport ATV world and still has followers to this day. ![]() Why Banshees Were Discontinued?Įveryone always wants to know why did Yamaha stop making the Banshee 350. I believe the Banshee is the Dune King after seeing how it rips around, maybe you will feel the same and might wonder why banshees were discontinued. If you already own a Banshee four wheeler, then you will love these parts. Just the amount of aftermarket parts alone should tell you that this quad is still in high demand. This does not hold true for every ATV owner and is almost like the “Which is better: Ford or Chevy?” argument that has raged on for many years. The Banshee 350 has been the Dune King for a very long time in some ATV rider’s minds. The Banshee is considered an off road ATV and not one designed for closed courses only, so they were affected by this regulation. The EPA put stiff regulations on off road vehicles and 2 stroke engines emit well above the limit for this regulation. It’s 2 stroke, 350cc engine had a huge power band, and a truckload of horsepower to smoke the dunes. Production continued for Canada until 2008 and Australia until 2012. Yamaha stopped production of the Banshee in North America in 2006 due to EPA regulations. The Banshee is a 2 stroke ATV that has been dubbed King of the Dunes by many and despite the production being halted, it still is one of the most prevalent quads in most dunes today. If you have ever been to any dunes where off roaders frequent and see a tiny little ATV screaming by with a high pitched engine, screaming like a banshee tearing up the sand, then you have seen the Yamaha Banshee in its natural element. ![]() ![]() Be sure to check out my tips for photographing planets. This technique is called eyepiece projection astrophotography. I captured the photograph of Saturn shown below through my telescope eyepiece, using a point-and-shoot digital camera. For comparison, it never appears larger than the Planet Jupiter does at opposition. When you include the size of Saturn’s rings, the system grows to 2.25 times as wide as the disc. In its most favorable oppositions, the disc of Saturn is about 21 arcseconds in diameter. How Big Does Saturn Look Through a Telescope? Most of the variations in magnitude are due to the inclination of Saturn’s rings relative to the Sun and Earth. The mean apparent magnitude of Saturn is 0.46 with a standard deviation of 0.34. ![]() Saturn’s brightness ( apparent magnitude) from Earth varies over time. They may look like “bright stars” to the unaided eye, but looking through a telescope will reveal that they are in fact planets. This is helpful when trying to locate Saturn from your backyard. In general, the gas giant planets Saturn, and Jupiter are quite bright and easy to identify in the night sky. By 4 am, it has reached a high enough apparent altitude to comfortably view Saturn through a telescope. The Stellarium planetarium software will show you where and when to find Saturn from your location.Īt the time of writing, Saturn rises early in the morning from my latitude on Earth. This will show you exactly where to look for Saturn from your location. To find the current location of Saturn, I suggest using an astronomy app on your mobile phone with a planetarium simulator. Saturn is not always visible to everyone on Earth because sometimes it lies too close to the Sun from our vantage point on Earth to view at night. The position of Saturn in your night sky will also depend on your location on Earth. It is orbiting the Sun just as Earth is, except that it takes Saturn 29-years (Earth years, of course), to complete its orbital period around the Sun. ![]() The position of the planet Saturn in the night sky changes over time. It is the second-largest moon in the entire solar system.įor more information, check out Universe Today’s roundup of interesting facts about Saturn. Astronomers have discovered that Titan has a substantial atmosphere. Saturn has over 80 known moons, and 53 of them are officially named. Saturn’s rings are mostly comprised of ice particles, along with rocky interstellar debris and dust. The most famous feature of this planet is, of course, its beautiful ring system. It is the 6th planet from the Sun in our Solar System, and the second-largest planet overall. Saturn is a massive gas giant with an average radius of about nine times that of the Earth. This is what Saturn looked like the first time I saw it through a telescope. In this article, I’ll explain how you can see Saturn through a telescope yourself, and what to expect. I suggest using a 15mm eyepiece through a Dobsonian telescope ( here is the one I own and recommend) for the best chances of success. It is said that any small telescope is capable of viewing Saturn’s rings at 25X magnification. This affordable telescope had enough power and magnification to see Saturn’s rings, in all their glory. I first viewed the planet Saturn with a 4.5″ Dobsonian telescope from my backyard about 10 years ago. You won’t see a NASA quality image of Saturn using a backyard telescope, but I think you may be surprised at how satisfying a “real-time” view of this planet is. Seeing Saturn through a backyard telescope is an experience that everyone on Earth should be able to enjoy at least once in their lifetime. I hate sifting throw tens of options when configuring a car, always not sure about the choices, feeling like I'm wasting money or missing out, and ending up with a ton more $$ on the price tag. One thing I liked was the minimal options. If you’re willing to move up to something larger, heavier and even more expensive, the full-size Nissan Armada is certainly trail-ready thanks to being nearly identical to the legendary world-market Patrol. Jeep’s much more refined Grand Cherokee is also respected off the beaten path, but it’s larger, more upscale and therefore pricier than the SUVs just mentioned, while Dodge and Ford provide their Durango and Explorer utilities in this upper class respectively, albeit with limited 4×4 capability. The 4Runner is long and therefore fully capable of hauling loads of cargo and passengers. Toyota and Nissan have opted out of this compact segment, however, so their respective FJ Cruiser and Xterra SUVs can only be purchased on the pre-owned market. Jeep is the go-to-choice for many, its regular-wheelbase Wrangler, four-door Wrangler Unlimited and new Gladiator pickup truck being favourites within the go-anywhere crowd, while Ford has finally anted up with the long-awaited Bronco in regular and lite Sport flavours.
